Book review <2024 세종 서평 공모전> 군주론 서평 - (이시우 | 2024-10-31 Write) Star point : 군주론의 저자인 마키아벨리는 이탈리아의 정치철학자였다. 그는 당시 이탈리아 도시 국가들의 세력 다툼으로 정치적 혼란이 극심한 것을 보며 군주의 강력한 권력을 통해 이탈리아를 통합해야 한다고 생각했다. 권력을 유지하기 위해 고대 로마의 역사와 현실을 참고해 현실적이고 실용적인 지식을 강조한 내용을 담은 책이 군주론이다. 마키아벨리는 "군주가 명성을 얻기 위해 어떻게 처신해야 하는가?"라는 물음에 "중립을 취하지 말 것"이라고 한다. 나는 이 부분을 읽으며 저자의 생각에 의문이 들었다. 마키아벨리와 달리 중립 외교를 실시해 명과 청 사이에서 조선의 평화를 유지한 광해군이 있다. 당장 국가가 전쟁 준비가 되지 않았다면 중립을 취하고 실리를 추구하는 것이 옳다고 생각했다. 현실적이고 실용적인 방법이 중립을 취하지 않는 방법이라는 것에 모순이 있다. 득보다 실이 더 클 것이 분명함에도 중립을 거부하고 무조건 싸우고 전쟁하는 것은 바람직하지 못하다. <2024 세종 서평 공모전> 군주론 서평 - (이하람 | 2024-10-08 Write) Star point : 군주론은 마키아벨리가 본인만의 정치 권력의 본질을 탐구한 작품이며 군주가 권력을 얻고 유지하기 위한 다양한 전략을 제시하고 있다. 이 책에서는 군주가 어떻게 비도덕적 행위를 정당화할 수 있는지를 설명하면서 권력의 현실을 분석한다. 마키아벨리는 정치에서의 도덕성과 비도덕성의 경계를 모호하게 하여 권력의 본질에 대한 깊은 사유를 유도한다. 이 작품은 당시 정치적 혼란 속에서 자신의 정치적 철학을 정립한 결과로 현대 정치 이론에도 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 하지만 그의 주장은 종종 비극적이고 비인간적이라고 비판받기도 하며, 권력을 위한 수단이 정당화될 수 있는지에 대한 논쟁을 불러일으킨다. 개인적으로 마키아벨리의 현실주의적 접근은 정치의 복잡성을 잘 드러내지만, 그로 인해 인간 본성이 간과될 수 있다는 우려도 생긴다. 물론 책의 제목인 군주론과는 비슷한 모습이지만 군주는 인간으로서의 모습도 필요하다고 생각한다. 따라 나는 이 책이 권력의 본질을 이해하는 데 중요한 통찰을 제공하면서도 인간의 도덕적 딜레마에 대한 깊은 성찰을 요구하는 작품이라고 생각한다. <2024 세종 서평 공모전> 니콜로 마키아벨리의 군주론 서평 - (이진영 | 2024-09-26 Write) Star point : 15세기 이탈리아의 정치가였던 니콜로 마키아벨리는 피렌체 지역을 다스리는 메디치 가문의 눈밖에 나 실각한 상황에서 메디치 가문의 어린 군주 로렌초 메디치에게 일종의 지침서를 집필해 바치는데 그 책이 바로 군주론이다. 군주론은 다양한 종류의 군주국가와 그 특성들, 군주가 특별히 갖추어야 할, 또 갖추지 말아야 할 여러 덕목들에 대해서 서술하고 있고 여러 위기에 직면한 전체 이탈리아의 통합을 권고하는 것으로 마무리 지어진다. 이 책의 명성에 대해서는 익히 들어 알고 있었고, 실제로 읽어보면서도 논쟁적인 문장으로 그 명성을 얻은 것도 이해가 갔다. 군주의 비도덕적 행위에 대한 마키아벨리의 관점은 개인의 신념에 따라 비판받을 수도 있겠으나, 나는 그의 주장에 동의한다는 결론을 내리게 되었다. 제목에서도 알다시피 이 책은 다른 누구도 아닌 군주를 위해 쓰여졌고, 군주를 위한 행동지침을 다루고 있다. 이 책이 시민론 이라든지 인간론 따위의 제목이었다면 내용에 대해 반박할 부분이 더러 있었겠으나 작게는 영지, 크게는 제국을 다스리는 군주라면 그의 결정 하나하나가 공동체의 운명과 생명으로 직결되기 때문에 공동체를 위한, 저자의 표현을 빌리자면 신민을 위한 비도덕적 행위는 참작되어야 할 것이다. 더욱이 마키아벨리가 군주론을 저술한 15세기의 이탈리아는 강대한 제국 로마의 멸망 이후 여러 파벌들과 도시국가들의 세력 투쟁 등으로 분열이 심화된 상태였으며 프랑스, 스페인 등의 강력한 외세의 위협이 도사리고 있었다. 지도자의 그릇된 판단은 지도자 개인의 실각으로 끝나지 않고 공동체 전체가 그 피해를 감수해야 하는 것이다. 숨 가쁘게 변화하는 국제 정세 속에 여러 강대국들의 틈바구니에 끼어 있으면서도 각계각층으로 분열되어 있는 반도국가의 국민으로서 저자의 현실 인식에 대한 공감과 자국우선주의에 대한 자아비판적인 경각심을 동시에 느끼며 군주론의 서평을 적어본다.
